Johannesson's team looked for the alloys that could best resist high temperatures and corrosion among all possible combinations of 32 different metals, with up to four different metals in each alloy. There were 192,016 candidate materials in total.
The researchers developed an evolutionary strategy for their computer search. Promising combinations of elements were allowed to breed to generate new mixtures, and the best of each generation were picked out. They could also tune the search to practical considerations, for example by excluding the most costly metals.
This approach identified several of the best superalloys currently in use (which were found the hard way, by trial and error). It also suggested some new alloys that look promising. Metallurgists can now focus their attention on these rather than having to survey the entire gamut of possibilities.
Evolutionary computer searching, say the researchers, "may narrow down the number of experiments needed for the development of new materials."
